Recognising Abuse & Exploitation

Activities on this topic have been developed to provide an opportunity for participants to learn about the physical and emotional changes that take place during puberty. Workshops on this topic would also typically include information about good personal hygiene.

During workshops on this topic, participants will:

Age 4 upwards (as appropriate)

  • Recognise what areas of the body are private, and the difference between good touches and bad touches.
  • Identify safe situations and those which may be risky; like other children or adults taking improper photographs of them.
  • Identify trusted adults (both at home and school) who they can talk to if they feel worried.

Age 6 upwards (as appropriate)

  • Understand the importance of boundaries within friendships and personal relationships, including online and through technologies such as mobile phones and games.

Age 11 upwards (as appropriate)

  • Examine potential grooming and exploitation scenarios in a realistic but age appropriate way.
  • Explore practical tactics to stay safe while using the internet, technology and games.

Age 13 upwards (as appropriate)

  • Learn how to identify behaviours that constitute or could lead to abuse within relationships
  • Learn about support that is available to victims of abuse
  • Learn about the law regarding sex and exploitation
  • Discuss how best to support someone we think might be in an abusive relationship
